Western Wildfires Prompt Thousands of Evacuations
Crews are busy across the West battling wildfires. In rural Southern Colorado, the Mason Fire forced 5,000 people to flee their homes. Lightning sparked that blaze nearly a week ago. Wind and hot temperatures helped it grow quickly to more than 11,000 acres.

Pentagon Seeks to Close 33 Major Military Bases
The Pentagon recommends closing 33 major bases and realigning another 29. In total, it seeks to shut more than 150 military installations. The government estimates the cuts would result in a net loss of 29,000 military and civilian jobs at a savings of nearly $49 billion over 20 years. It is the first round of base closings proposed in a decade.
South Dakotans Rally to Defend Imperiled Base
When the Pentagon released a list of 33 major military installations it wants shut down, it sent shock waves through many cities and states. The proposed closing of Ellsworth Air Force Base, home to a fleet of bombers, is going over badly in Rapid City. Charles Michael Ray of South Dakota Public Radio reports.

Newsweek says it is retracting its report that a copy of the Quran was flushed down a toilet by U.S. personnel at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, during an interrogation. The original report drew significant criticism from the U.S. government and was blamed for deadly protests in Afghanistan.
