SLED, local law enforcement investigating an inmate’s death in Lancaster

Anderson County is trying to untangle some old-school thinking about criminal justice, bureaucracy, and treatment of inmates. An in-design mental health court could steer dozens away from a revolving door of jail, arrest, and detention, and an in-design jail could also address mental health issues for those who end up there.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office released information on an inmate death investigation.

State and local law enforcement are trying to learn what led to the death of a 68-year-old man inside the Lancaster County Detention Center Wednesday. Responders said the unidentified man was being transported to a nurse’s station for a routine screening when he suffered from a medical emergency and collapsed.

He was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is leading the investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.

“We are saddened by the death of this man, and our prayers and condolences are extended to his family,” said Sheriff Barry Faile. “As our policy dictates, we immediately turned this investigation over to SLED and the Coroner. We have and will continue to provide these agencies all the information we have on this incident and will fully cooperate with their investigation.”

The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office is assisting SLED in the investigation. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death. The identity of the man has not been released yet.
