The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) says it is investigating the state's 28th officer-involved shooting this year. The Friday incident ended with one man in the hospital.
According to investigators, deputies responded shortly after 3 a.m. to a 911 call from a residence on the 200 block of Shadowfield Drive. When deputies arrived at the home, they encountered a 46-year-old man armed with a shotgun outside the residence. The suspect allegedly opened fire on two deputies, prompting them to return fire
No deputies were injured.
SLED was requested by the Lexington County Sheriff's Department (LCSD) to investigate the incident. This is the first officer-involved shooting for LCSD in 2026. The two responding deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave while the sheriff's department conducts an internal policy review.
It is standard practice for SLED to investigate officer-involved shootings at agencies' requests.
SLED reports there were 45 total office-involved shootings in the state in 2025.
