The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season has reached a record-breaking 60-year stretch without a single hurricane forming. While we have not had a hurricane yet, there have been five relatively weak named tropical storms. Not one has strengthened into a hurricane, which requires sustained winds of 74 mph or greater.
Is this the longest we’ve ever waited for a hurricane? Yes.
This is officially the longest the Atlantic has gone without a hurricane in the modern satellite era. The previous record for the latest first hurricane since modern tracking began was Sept. 10. The 2026 season officially broke that record over the weekend, reaching 103 days into the season on Sept. 11 without a hurricane.
Since it is now Sept. 16 and there are no active systems threatening to strengthen, the record continues to extend every day.
Historical records from before the mid-1960s technically show a few years when hurricanes took even longer to form.
- Latest first hurricane: In the pre-satellite era, a storm did not become a hurricane until Oct. 8, 1905.
- Years with zero hurricanes: Historical records note that the 1907 and 1914 seasons had zero hurricanes.
The data pre-1966 is hard to trust due to limited satellite information.
Before the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) launched weather satellites, if a hurricane formed over the open ocean and never hit land or crossed paths with a ship, it could go completely unrecorded. Because 2026 has continuous satellite surveillance, we know that the zero on the board right now is a true anomaly.
While ocean temperatures are warm enough to fuel storms, El Niño shifts atmospheric wind patterns globally. Over the Atlantic, it creates immense wind shear. This vertical wind shear essentially decapitates developing tropical disturbances, tearing them apart and cutting off the convection they need to organize into powerful storms.
