The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Greenville County.
The incident happened on Friday, Sept. 4, near the intersection of Page Drive and White Horse Road. According to a SLED news release, a Greenville County deputy saw Walter Jason Smith, 42, walking in the area armed with a gun. There was an exchange of gunfire after Smith allegedly pointed the gun at the officer who was in a patrol car.
SLED says Smith then ran into a field. A second deputy responded and there was another exchange of gunfire. One of the deputies was shot in the shoulder, and Smith was shot in the leg. Both were taken to the hospital. The injured deputy has been released and is recovering.
Smith is now being held at the Greenville County Detention Center without bond. He is charged with two counts of attempted murder, possession of firearm or ammunition by person convicted of violent offense and possession of weapon during violent crime.
The incident in Greenville County is the 26th officer-involved shooting in the state this year.
