The South Carolina Department of Transportation is moving into Phase 3C of the Carolina Crossroads Project, which includes replacing I-20 bridges and widening the interstate between Sunset Boulevard and Bush River Road.

South Carolina Transportation Secretary Justin Powell and Federal Highway Administrator Sean McMaster will give an update on the Carolina Crossroads Project Wednesday.

Construction is underway on Phase 3C of the project, which focuses on replacing the I-20 bridges over the Saluda River and CSX railroad. It will also widen I-20 between US 378 (Sunset Boulevard) and Bush River Road.

The Carolina Crossroads Project, which began in November 2021, is one of the largest construction ventures in South Carolina's history. Officials say the project will pave way for reduced congestion, modern infrastructure, and improved safety.

Overall, the project is set to bring 132 new lane miles, 43 new bridges, 14 widened interstate miles, and 7 reconstructed interchanges to the state. Completion on Phase 3C is expected in 2029.

Wednesday's news conference will take place at the Carolina Crossroads Project site in Columbia at 11 a.m.
