Three people are dead after an early-morning chase through Spartanburg Saturday. Deputies say the incident is related to a suspected burglary.
During a Saturday afternoon press conference, Sheriff Rhyne said a car was parked on the side of the road around 2 a.m. that morning. Rhyne described the car as suspicious, as two deputies patrolling the area reported a man with a mask and dark clothes coming out of an overgrown area and into the car.
Investigators said when deputies attempted to make contact, the car fled.
The chase continued until the car crashed into a tree near the intersection of U.S. Highway 221 and Fosters Grove. Sheriff Rhyne told reporters the car immediately caught on fire. All three inside died on-scene.
“This is a tragedy any time something like this takes place,” said Rhyne. “I ask the public as a whole to keep the families of these victims in your prayers.”
Rhyne said identifying the victims will take time due to the fire. The county coroner’s office is assisting the investigation
