The U.S. Forest Service says 15 firefighters responded to a 15-acre wildfire on Horse Island Saturday afternoon. The fire has reportedly burned more than 800 acres. Berkeley County residents along Cane Swamp Lane and the west side of Tiger Corner Road were evacuated Sunday.
The Berkeley County government says a dense smoke advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. Monday.
The Forest Service says the swampy area, which has layers of dead plant matter and flammable vegetation, makes the fire difficult for crews to battle. Firefighters are using bulldozers to create a fuel break to help mitigate spread.
The county is warning its residents and surrounding areas of dense smoke. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The level of containment hasn’t been announced as on Monday morning.
