Columbia man convicted of hate crime to be sentenced Thursday

Jonathan Felkel, 34, was indicted last December with violating the housing rights of his Black neighbor, Jarvis McKenzie. He pleaded guilty in March.

The Columbia man convicted of a hate crime targeting his Black neighbor will be sentenced in federal court Thursday. Jonathan Felkel, 34, pleaded guilty in March.

Felkel was indicted last December with violating the housing rights of his Black neighbor, Jarvis McKenzie. Court documents show Felkel fired his gun and made threatening comments toward McKenzie last July while Felkel was driving into the gated community where they both lived.

Felkel faces up to nine years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Matthew J. Perry Courthouse in Columbia.
