The South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) is part of a multi-state effort to curb excessive speeding and aggressive driving on highways. Operation Southern Slow Down accelerates each year during what's known as the 100 Deadly Days of Summer.
Other law enforcement partners joining in the campaign are Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. The goal is to detour the number of speeding drivers to reduce the risk of traffic and pedestrian-related injuries and fatalities.
Drivers in the state can expect to see increased patrols and traffic enforcement efforts through July 19. Last year, there were 34,150 speed-related collisions in South Carolina. Of those collisions, 337 people died.
Operation Southern Slowdown began in 2017. Additional information can be found on the SCDPH website.
