Lexington County man charged in officer-involved shooting

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has charged Thomas Waring, 39, of West Columbia in the June 10 shooting.

Bond has been denied for Thomas Waring, 39, of West Columbia. He is charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and possession of firearm or ammunition by person convicted of certain crimes following an officer-involved shooting in Lexington County on June 10.

Waring was arrested Thursday and booked into the Lexington County Detention Center.

According to a SLED arrest warrant, Waring intended to kill a West Columbia police officer during an encounter at an apartment on North Brown Street. The report shows Waring pointed a handgun at the officer and fired multiple shots, hitting the officer in the arm.

Waring was also shot during the exchange. Both he and the officer were taken to the hospital for treatment and released.

The incident in Lexington County is the 19th officer involved-shooting in the state this year. Last year, there were 45 officer involved shootings in South Carolina. None involved the West Columbia Police Department.
