Every county in South Carolina is still in some stage of drought, heading into the hottest weekend of the year.
The U.S. Drought Monitor shows abnormally dry conditions along the state’s western border with Georgia — and the conditions get even drier towards the coast.
Most of the coastline this week is in a state of extreme drought. That’s the second-driest category measured.
The dryness is taking its toll on soils in the Grand Strand and Pee Dee especially. Soils in Horry, Florence, and Williamsburg counties are extremely dry, almost countywide.
Extremely dry soil also stretches into Orangeburg and Dorchester counties to the south while soils in the Midlands and Upstate are still reaping the benefits of rains in May.
There is a chance of rain this weekend as highs near triple digits. Get the latest weather information online at South Carolina ETV and Public Radio.
