Just one day after services for the Emanuel nine victims, Charleston remembers the lives of nine heroic firefighters.

Days of remembrance continue in the Holy City, as today marks the 19th anniversary of the Charleston nine tragedy.

On June 18, 2007, the Charleston Fire Department responded to an inferno. The Sofa Super Store went up in flames in the West Ashley. In what would become the deadliest day for U.S. firefighters since Sept. 11, 2001, nine men were killed after the building of the store collapsed.

The tragedy sparked change both within the Charleston Fire Department and how buildings are structured.

The site of the former Sofa Super Store was later purchased by the city and turned into a memorial. A ceremony will be conducted at the Charleston 9 Memorial Park, 1807 Savannah Highway. The ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. and is open to the public.
