The Berkeley County coroner is reminding people extreme heat can be deadly as much of the state is expected to see 90-degree temperatures this weekend.

A 68-year-old Moncks Corner man has died from complications from the heat, according to the Berkeley County coroner. Darnell Hartwell says this marks the state’s first heat related death this year.

Hartwell released no other details, including the man’s name. But he says the man died outside his home.

The coroner says the incident is a reminder that heat can be deadly. He says heat-related illness can affect anyone, although older adults, young children and people with chronic disease are most at risk.

This weekend, temperatures across the state are expected to swell to 90 degrees with the heat index, or feels like temperature, climbing to more than 100 degrees.

Harwell advises people to avoid the sun during extreme heat, stay hydrated, and never leave children or pets in a vehicle. Last year, 33 children died nationwide after being left in hot cars.
