The fire caused damage to the school’s gym and foyer area.
No injuries were reported, and the building can be repaired. Just not before the end of the school year.
Dr. Jaime Hembree, the Superintendent for the McCormick County School District, took to social media to break the news.
“We are so thankful to the swift response of multiple firefighter units that responded to the fire at McCormick High School Friday evening into Saturday morning,” Hembree posted on Facebook. “Over 75 firefighters across the state worked to contain and eventually put out the fire that originated in the roof of the high school gym.”
Though students will not be returning to class, graduating seniors will still have their ceremony this Friday, May 29. Hembree said the commencement will take place in a new location.
Those plans are expected to be announced Tuesday afternoon.
