The impacts are widespread. From farmers to utility companies, people are feeling the pinch.

It’s been a historically dry season for South Carolina. Thursday’s updated data shows all of the state is under severe drought.

The impacts are widespread. From farmers to utility companies, people are feeling the pinch.

With Memorial Day weekend here, the dry conditions could put a damper on celebrations. Even though South Carolina is forecasted for rain this weekend, dry grass is susceptible to wildfire spread. Officials urge caution with bonfires and fireworks shows.

For those headed to the water, lake levels are low across the state. Most of South Carolina is experiencing a rainfall deficit of 12 inches or more. The lack of rain has caused lakes around the state to see deficits from five to over 10 feet. Shallow areas of water in lakes can pose a threat to boaters.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) is conducting free boating inspections ahead of the holiday to help emphasize safety. If a boat is found out of compliance during the inspection, the owner will not be cited. Instead, boaters will be given a chance to fix any issues before launching it into the water.

The next drought monitor report will be released May 28.
