The event, spearheaded by the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE), had State Superintendent Ellen Weaver honor each student by draping them in a Military Honor Cord.

“These students represent the very best of South Carolina. They are not choosing the easy path,” said Weaver. “They are choosing a life of duty and sacrifice. As our nation approaches its 250th birthday, they are stepping forward to carry on the legacy begun at our founding. We are deeply grateful for their courage, their love of country, and their commitment to serve. They honor our state, and because of them, our nation is stronger.”

SCDE also recognized Bishopville native Maj. James Capers Jr., who is set to receive a Presidential Medal of Honor for his service in Vietnam.

The hour-long ceremony can be viewed online.
