The incident on May 8 marks the 14th officer-involved shooting in the state this year.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Aiken County. The incident on May 8 marks the 14th officer-involved shooting in the state this year and the second involving the Aiken County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators say state troopers tried to pull a man over for speeding, but he didn't stop. That's when a car chase began. Troopers were joined by Aiken deputies in the chase which ended several miles down the road when the car hit the cable median barrier.

SLED reports the driver—armed with a rifle—then got out of the vehicle and ran before officers caught up with him in a wooded area. The man was shot by deputies during an encounter. He remains in the hospital.

There were 45 officer-involved shootings in South Carolina last year—two of those involving the Aiken County Sheriff's Office.
