Former gamecock football player, Stephen Garcia, announced his cancer diagnosis on social media Wednesday.

Garcia, 38, was a quarterback for the University of South Carolina from 2008 until 2011. He posted on Facebook a link to a GoFundMe titled "Stephen Garcia’s Fight: Beating Stage 4 Cancer.”

According to his post, he is battling colorectal cancer. The American Cancer society finds cases of this type of cancer are rising by 3% annually in adults aged 20-49.

“If there’s one lesson to be learned, get checked and don’t be afraid to visit the doctor's office when you don’t feel 100%,” Garcia wrote. He went on to say he wants everyone to be mindful of what they are eating.

Garcia was a starter in 34 South Carolina games under then head coach Steve Spurrier.
