The funds from the Federal Aviation Administration will help improve safety, efficiency and infrastructure.

Congressman James Clyburn has announced more than $1 million in funding for rural airports in the state's 6th Congressional District. The Transportation Aviation Grant funds from the Federal Aviation Administration total $1,642,458.

Walterboro will receive the largest amount at $917,458 to construct a new taxiway to bring the airport up to current safety standards. Allendale County will receive $443,00 for runway lighting improvements and Orangeburg has been granted $282,000 to update the city's existing airport layout.

"Improving the safety, efficiency, and infrastructure of our airports in South Carolina remains one of my key priorities as Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation," Clyburn. “These upgrades mean more reliable service, jobs, and opportunities for our state. I continue to support the need for robust investments in our local transportation and airport centers, and welcome these grants that will help improve the day-to-day lives for South Carolinians and those travelling throughout our state.”

The funding is part of the federal Airport Improvement Program, which supports the development of public-use airports nationwide.
