The Greenville Police Department has released more information about a man arrested in connection with an officer-involved shooting earlier this week.
Washington is accused of injuring himself and two officers on April 13 in downtown Greenville.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), the agency investigating the shooting, reported Washington struggled while officers attempted to detain him for alleged public intoxication, and an officer's holstered gun was discharged as a result. He is also accused of biting the hand of the second officer. All three involved were taken to the hospital and later released.
In a separate release from SLED's investigation, Greenville officers say Washington has an active and extensive criminal record with a history of assault on officers.
According to the statement, the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) lists Washington as a suspect of a hit-and-run on I-85 that happened just hours before he made contact with officers in downtown on April 13. Investigators say the car he drove during that collision was stolen.
His criminal history isn't limited to South Carolina, according to law enforcement. Washington has multiple active warrants out of Maine, including domestic violence, failure to stop for police, driving to endanger, and operating without a license.
The incident in Greenville County is the tenth officer involved shooting in South Carolina this year. Last year, there were 45 officer involved shootings in South Carolina—including one involving Greenville police.
