The state Department of Insurance is now accepting applications for the program which assists coastal residents with home safety upgrades to protect during hurricanes and strong winds.

The South Carolina Department of Insurance (SCDOI) is now accepting applications for its Safe Home Grant Program. Through the program, coastal homeowners are eligible to receive grants to assist with certain hurricane and weather-related safety upgrades.

Upgrades include mitigation measures such as roof and exterior opening enhancements, hurricane shutters and protective barriers. The grants do not pay for regular home repairs, remodeling or building new rooms.

To be eligible, the dwelling must be a single-family home and the applicant's primary residence. Applicants who have previously been awarded a Safe Home grant are not eligible.

Additional information about the program and eligibility requirements can be found on the SCDOI website. The 2026 hurricane season begins June 1.
