Candidate filing reopens for House District 64 after its only Democratic candidate drops out

The first year of the legislative session is set to end May 11, which is less than a month away. Crossover Day was April 10 which is a time when bills have to clear one chamber to another in order to have a higher chance of making it to the governor’s desk before Sine Die this year.

House District 64 covers portions of Clarendon and Sumter Counties.

South Carolina's Democratic Party moved to reopen candidate filing for House District 64 this week, after filing for the 2026 election cycle closed last Monday, March 30.

The district covers parts of Clarendon and Sumter Counties. The seat is currently held by Republican State Representative Fawn Pedalino. The only Democrat to challenge Pedalino for that seat was David Epperson. He withdrew from the race before candidate certification was complete. That, according to state law, allows the political party to temporarily reopen filing for the district seat.

The party announced the new filing period will be open from noon on Wednesday, April 8, until noon on Friday, April 10. Any Democrat vying for the seat must pay the $208 fee and submit the required paperwork to an approved location.

Those locations are:

  • The South Carolina Election Commission (1122 Lady St., Columbia)
  • The Clarendon County Board of Voter Registration and Elections (3 South Church St., Manning)
  • The Sumter County Board of Voter Registration and Elections (129 East Liberty St., Sumter)

If multiple candidates file, the race will be decided during the Democratic Primary on June 9.
