Several South Carolina restaurants are up for top awards in culinary achievement

They’re often called the Oscars of the food world. And this year, three South Carolina restaurants have been named finalists in the James Beard Awards.

The awards recognize culinary achievements across the nation. And the finalists announced Tuesday include two eateries in Charleston as well as one in Greenville.

Charleston

Merci is a bistro located at the corner of Pitt and Montagu in Charleston. It just opened last year and already it’s one of ten finalists in the Best New Restaurant category.

Also on the list is Welton’s Tiny Bakeshop. It can be found on Upper King Street and is among five finalists named in the category of Outstanding Bakery.

Greenville

Finally, in Greenville, Joe Cash is a finalist for Best Chef, Southeast category. He owns a French bistro on Main Street called Scoundrel. He’s one of five finalists across the Carolinas, George, Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia.

The winners of the James Beard awards will be announced at a ceremony in Chicago on June 15.
