This year's tax season was predicted to be a bad one. The IRS is short staffed, underfunded and underequipped, say experts.

The South Carolina Department of Revenue has extended the tax filing deadline to Oct. 15. Taxpayers must still pay at least 90% of the amount owed by April 15 to avoid penalties.

South Carolinians have extra time to file their 2025 state income tax returns, the South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) announced Thursday.

Taxpayers have until Oct. 15 to file but must still pay at least 90% of the amount owed by April 15 to avoid penalties. No action is required to take advantage of the filing extension.

SCDOR is offering the extension as the state legislature continues working on House Bill 3368 to conform with the current Internal Revenue Code, including the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. If passed, SCDOR will provide additional information, including guidance for taxpayers who have already filed their 2025 returns.

SCDOR suggests using MyDORWAY to pay your balance. Once online, select Individual Income Tax Payment to get started.
