Sheria Clarke faces Senate Judiciary Committee, seeks confirmation as U.S. District Judge for SC

Sheria Clarke was nominated by President Trump to serve as a federal district judge for South Carolina.

Sheria Clarke sat before a U.S. Judiciary Committee Wednesday following her nomination to serve as a federal district judge.

The Greenville attorney was nominated by President Trump to fill a vacancy within South Carolina. SC Sen. Tim Scott (R) S.C. and Lindsey Graham (R) S.C. vocally supported her nomination when it was announced. "She is one of the most highly qualified candidates I’ve ever seen to be a federal district court judge," said Sen. Graham

The nearly two-hour hearing, which also included three other district judge nominees from other states, began with Sen. Scott introducing Clarke.

"Her background is not typical for judicial candidates," said Sen. Scott. "...Sheria has built a distinguished legal career built in service both in the court room and in her community."

During the hearing, she was questioned on Jan. 6 and the 2020 election results by Democrats. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D) Conn. criticized Clarke's responses to those questions.

"I am amazed by the insult of this committee," said Sen. Blumenthal. "...seeking to be a federal judge subverting our constitution and showing how you have no independence, which is essential to a federal judge."

The committee will vote on the slate of potential judges at a later date. Clarke's nomination will be confirmed should she receive a majority vote within the U.S. Senate.
