Three Lowcountry events mark the unofficial start of tourism season

Bridging divides? The Arthur Ravenel Jr., Bridge in Charleston connects the peninsula with Mt. Pleasant. While the Charleston area Republican electorate varies ideologically, in general, from other parts of the state, it nevertheless is part of what makes the state party so representative of the national party.

Just like pollen, it's a sure sign of spring. Several weekend events will bring thousands to the Lowcountry.

‘Tis the season for tourists to descend on the Lowcountry this weekend with three big events expected to bring hundreds of thousands of people to the area.

Cooper River Bridge Run

The annual Cooper River Bridge Run will be held Saturday, March 28. The nation’s third largest 10k is capped this year at 38,500 walkers and runners. They will gather at the base of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and make their way to Charleston over the Cooper River.

The event begins with an expo Thursday and Friday at the Charleston Area Convention Center. There, participants can pick up race day packets while visiting as many as 200 vendors focused on fitness, nutrition, and athletic apparel.

Flower town festival

The 52nd annual Flower Town Festival hosted by the Summerville Family YMCA gets underway this weekend as well, in historic downtown Summerville.

The three-day arts and crafts festival begins Friday and typically attracts some 200,000 visitors.

Last year’s event was one of the largest, with more than 400 vendors offering the work of local artists and tons of food. The festival is open from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Sunday, it closes at 4 p.m.

Credit One Charleston Open

Finally, the Credit One Charleston Open, formerly known as the Family Circle Cup, is back again with women’s professional tennis.

It starts Saturday and continues through April 5 at the Credit One Stadium on Daniel Island. The nine-day event includes qualifying rounds and championship finals.

Some of the key players to watch this year are defending champion Jessica Pegula, 2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys and local favorite Emma Navarro.

All three events combined are expected to bring millions in economic impact to the Lowcountry.
