New data from the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs (SCDCA) shows a 56% decline in residents impacted by data leaks last year.
In 2025, just under three million South Carolinians were affected. That's an improvement from the nearly seven million victims reported in 2024.
While the numbers are down, state leaders caution its still important to monitor accounts. Financial institutions and the healthcare industry tied for the most reported breaches last year, followed closely by the education sector.
SCDCA offers quarterly webinars to provide businesses with an overview of the state and federal laws on how to handle the personal information of South Carolina residents. The webinar schedule can be found online.
